Caulfield Review 7-Jan-18
Race 1: Maree Madden-Melder Handicap 1800m
Shenandoah (1st) led and got control up front, gave a kick around the turn and kept finding late to just hold on. So Splendid (2nd) box seated, when gap appeared, hit a small flat spot but kept coming late to just miss. Addison (3rd) settled last and ran on strongly late, big run.
Race 2: Annette Daymon Handicap 2000m
O’ Lonera (1st) sat outside the leader and showed a nice sprint to put a gap on the field, just held on late. Angelucci (2nd) had a lovely run just off the speed, kept coming in the straight to just miss. Portion Control (3rd) settled towards the rear and made steady ground in the straight.
Race 3: Sam Segman Handicap 1100m
Magnesium Rose (1st) had the perfect run just off the speed, peeled out on straightening, sprinted well to put them away. Teleplay (2nd) settled towards the rear on the rails, ran on well late in the straight, nice type. Ultra Smart (3rd) box seated, never got out till the 200m mark, ran on well.
Race 4: Sandra Cheevers Handicap 1400m
Keen (1st) had the perfect run in transit, was able to shoulder into the clear on straightening, dug in strongly late to score. Mahamedeis (2nd) had a nice run midfield, peeled widest in the straight, ran on strongly to just miss. Éclair Calling (3rd) had a lovely run in transit, did enough in the straight.
Race 5: Alice Mosley Handicap 1100m
Mamzelle Tess (1st) settled towards the rear, only looked to be struggling 250m out, knuckled down strongly last 100m to score. If Not Now When (2nd) settled at the rear and ran on strongly late. Tykiato (3rd) settled midfield, hit the lead 150m out, was bloused late.
Race 6: Matthew Davies Handicap 1600m
Widgee Turf (1st) had a lovely run box seating, gap appeared and sprinted well, just held on late. Royal Ace (2nd) settled at the rear, peeled widest in the straight and attacked the line strongly to just miss. Plot the Course (3rd) settled towards the rear, made good ground in the straight.
Race 7: Geraldine Camilleri Handicap 1200m
Sheriff John Stone (1st) had a nice run midfield, showed a nice sprint to hit the lead, just held on late. Crystal Spirit (2nd) and Manolo Blahniq (3rd) both settled midfield and hit flat spots early in the straight, both picked up to run on well late. Prevailing Winds (7th) didn’t have much luck.
Race 8: Alex Burrows Handicap 1400m
The Avenger (1st) settled midfield and travelled into the race nicely, knuckled down strongly last 100m to get up. Trogir (2nd) was caught three wide on the speed, showed a great sprint to dash clear, winner just too strong late, good run. Painte (3rd) had a nice run midfield, ran on well in the straight.
Race 9: Jodie Taylor Handicap 1100m
Nasdex (1st) sat outside the leader and kicked clear on straightening, held on late. Murphy’s Reward (2nd) was caught three wide on speed and still let down well in the straight, kept finding late, good run. Handsome Thief (3rd) was heavily backed, settled towards the rear, was held up early in the straight, got out and ran on strongly, should have gone close.
