Dean's thoughts on the Flemington Track
Obviously the talk of the Flemington Cup Carnival so far has been the state of the track. Unfortunately the track preparation has been a disgrace. Derby Day simply had a fast lane near the rails, and if you weren't there you couldn't win. Cup Day today was somewhat similar, with three different track readings between good and soft across the track, and some areas out wide like quicksand compared to closer to the fence.
It's a crying shame that on the best racing week of the year we've been subjected to this. In the previous 2 years we have absolutely dominated the Cup Carnival and the only losing day of 8 previous Flemington Spring Carnival days was Emirates day last year when the track also had a wicked on pace/fence bias.
One can only hope the track plays a little more fairly for Oaks and Emirates Stakes day, however given the one lane highway on the rails during Cox Plate Day as well, the track managers really need to fix these issues as it absolutely ruins the enjoyment of the days for all punters who don't get a fair go and simply have to hope their horses are in the fast lanes or they can't win. When it gets to that stage it's not investing, it's guessing, and it's the track managers' duty to ensure the tracks play fairly.
That's the end of my rant and fortunately we haven't done too much damage but all participants, trainers, jockeys, owners and punters are sick of copping poor or biased racing surfaces and it's becoming a major issue that the industry must address.
