There is black type racing across four states today.
The Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes is the most important 2YO race in Victoria. Normally held at Caulfield it is being ran at Sandown this year while Caulfield is under redevelopment and carries prizemoney of $2 million. Two colts go into the race undefeated with Barber having won 3 from 3 and The Instructor having 2 from 2. There is plenty of other talent and it should be a great race. The $750,000 Group 1 Futurity Stakes has a small but quality field that includes I'm Thunderstruck, Alligator Blood , Mr Brightside and Nugget and should be a nail-biting watch. The $750,000 Group 1 Oakleigh Plate will have a full field of 16 and the betting is wide open. The field includes Asfoora, I Am Me, Uncommon James, Star Patrol and many other good sprinters. This is the race where you want to get the trifecta. There are also three Group 2s, two Group 3s and a Listed race.
At Randwick there are 2 Group 1 races. The $600,000 Chipping Norton Stakes has been won twice by Verry Elleegant and 3 times by Winx and this year we will see Anamoe as the odds-on favourite. The $600,000 Surround Stakes for 3YO fillies includes In Secret, Zougotcha and Fireburn who all look suited by the set weights conditions. There are also three Group 2 races and the Group 3 $200,000 Liverpool City Cup where Think About It has won 5 of his 6 starts but has some solid opposition.
At Morphettville the feature race is the $127,250 Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes over 2600m which is a traditional lead-up to the Adelaide Cup. There are many Victorian entrants including Grand Promenade from the Maher/Eustace stable and also a Perth horse, Stafford's Lad. Ascot has 3 Listed races with the $125,000 Lex Piper Stakes for 3YO colts & geldings, the $125,000 Ascot 1000 Guineas for 3YO fillies, and the $125.000 Detonator Stakes over 1800m where the horses that ran the trifecta last year are all back for another try. There is also a solid 9 race card at Doomben.
