SPEED STARS WEEK IN REVIEW - 6TH MARCH

Comments: Mo’unga was a tragedy beaten no matter which way you look at it but the inside draw gave him no favours and he was left to make up too much when he finally got clear at the 200m. This was the difference between a winning and losing day.

Selection Review

Mo’unga $5.20 (2nd 1.3L from a 10.4u return) – all you have to do is watch the replay to see this horse should have won by panels, he made up 3L in the final 100m and likely just wins next time out.

Bivouac $3.00 (UNP) – all the key indicators were pointing to a win providing he turned up – well he didn’t. With less than 1L improvement on his 1st up run and 7L inferior to his Everest performance, I do not believe he has come up this prep and may well have reached the end of his racing career.

As a guide, Savitiano and Masked Crusader both ran almost identical numbers to last start (which is around their level) and if he was at the top of his game, he would have put 6L on them. The track was lightning fast on the day too with around 6L deducted from overall figures, something to consider if you are looking at raw times moving forward.

Pinkham $8.30 (UNP) – she has either not recovered from the EIPH or has some other issues as evidenced by her slow recovery in the Stewards Report. Her rating here was almost 5L below her last start at Caulfield and 10L below the rating I believe she is capable of based on her debut performance at Seymour.

Elite Street $38.70 (UNP) – although a 10L improvement on last start he was still 7L off his Winterbottom performance which would have been enough to win this race by almost 3L. I will accept this as a poor selection given the outcome, however at his best he would have been at the very least in the finish.

Summary

Lack of luck in running for Mo’unga cost us a winning day despite the overall performance of the other selections.
