What To Wear: Major Horse Races
What to wear to evening horse racing
While a day at the races may be synonymous with inebriated youngsters sauntering through the premises without shoes on, major horse races are an extremely formal event that traditionally require a high degree of formality from attendees.
Horse racing was initially a sport that was only accessible to the upper echelons of society. Considered a gentleman’s sport during its initial tenure in England, the wealthy and influential partook in the event wearing the finest garb as a means of showing off their societal status. This created the basis of formality that has continued on into the horse races of today. While the general public are invited to participate, there is still a sense of formality that must be adhered to, especially when it comes to the major evening races.
Dress code for gentlemen
The dress code for gentlemen at major evening races (at most metropolitan racecourses) will more often than not require men to attend in an outfit comprised of the following
- A dress shirt
- A formal tailored suit including tailored slacks and a blazer
- A tie or bow tie
- Dress shoes
An important thing to consider prior to choosing your outfit is the specific dress code of the club/racecourse you’re visiting as they may have certain dress requirements you will need to fulfil. This will ensure that you have plenty of time to choose your outfits accordingly without having to worry about being rejected from entering the premises on arrival.
Dress code for ladies
While it may be easier for ladies to choose from the variety of fashion items available at their disposal, there are still some strict measures that they will need to adhere to when attending majorevening horse races.
Most locations require that all outfits be formal in nature whether they be tailored suits or dresses, however items of clothing must not…
- Be too short in length
- Be casual in appearance (i.e. wearing shorts, sneakers or gumboots)
- Show off the midriff
A fascinator or hat is more-so worn during the day races and wouldn’t ordinarily be required at an evening race.
Outdoor racing events
Should the location of the races be outdoors, it will also be helpful to consider comfort in choosing your outfit. High heels tend to be troublesome when walking across grass, so wedges or formal ballet flats may be a more suitable option.
Another consideration is that long skirts may become dirty if dragged along the ground.
Furthermore, items that are white in colour may also prove cumbersome to clean if worn to the outdoor races, particularly if poor weather gives way to rain, making the premises muddy and slippery. With this in mind, it may also be helpful to assess what the weather conditions will be on the day of the evening races to help you better prepare.
